11/24/2013 – Indianapolis, IN — Felony charges have been filed against a Indiana jail inmate, allegedly for continuing to run a prostitution ring that touts porn star ‘talent’ – all while behind bars.
Joseph Ward, 30, was originally arrested last July on complaints of promoting prostitution, resisting arrest and battery by members of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Human Trafficking and Vice Unit.
Ward was also criminally charged with identity deception after it was learned he gave officers a fake name when originally booked into jail under the name Maliq Watkins.
BACKGROUND
In Ward’s July arrest court documents claim police were alerted to ads placed on Backpage.com by Ward, offering sexual encounters with a ‘porn star.’
Undercover officers were directed to the Hyatt Place hotel on Keystone Crossing Blvd. and arrested two women and one male after probable cause was established,
Police say one of the women, 32-year-old Dafayea D. Ingram, of Chatsworth, California, claimed to be a porn star who has made numerous XXX movies.
JohnTV has received information that Ingram worked in low budget porn videos that were distributed online under the name Jordan (Jordin) Skye.
Ingram was booked into jail on a misdemeanor complaint of prostitution.
Police claim the two individuals responsible for running the prostitution business are Ward and a woman, Lacy M. Strand, 21, of River Ave. in Indianapolis – booked into jail on felony complaints of promotion of prostitution and drug charges.
Ward was arrested after a foot chase near the hotel – resulting in the resisting and assault charges.
CURRENT ALLEGATIONS
According to a probable cause affidavit (see below), While being held in the Marion County Jail, investigators were able to record telephone conversations and trace cash deposits into Ward’s commissary account that prosecutors believe show Ward to still be in full control of his prostitution ring.
Court records detail how Ward gave a woman on the outside of the jail specific instructions on how to run ‘the business’ – including login usernames and passwords for posting prostitution related ads on websites like Backpage.com.
Ward also reportedly advised the woman on how to avoid possible police stings.
In published reports, Ward reportedly told one television news reporter, “They don’t have me saying anything about ‘go do this for money’ or ‘go perform this act for money.’ Promoting prostitution is knowing that somebody’s having sex with somebody for money and there’s nothing…about me saying anything about anything like that whatsoever.”
While Ward claims to have no priors for promoting prostitution, a records search revealed an active warrant out of Nashville for felony promotion of prostitution.
Ward claims he was simply instructing an associate to raise $5,000-$6,000 so he could make bail and hire an attorney.
Ward says he is not responsible for how the woman decides to make the money requested.
Investigators say the woman made at least one $1,200 deposit into Ward’s commissary account.
After the most recent allegations, police seized Ward’s account – which had a balance of just over $1,000.
Ward claims police are only coming after him so aggressively because he is black and the woman is white.
