12/15/2013 – (by Brian Bates) — Well, I just returned home this week from taping my latest Maury Show appearance in Stamford, CT.
I’m not sure how many appearances this makes, too many to count actually, but I’ve been appearing on the show since 2002.
So far in 2013 my appearances have been aired twice and this latest appearance should air in early Jan. of 2014.
I always get a little (to a lot) of ribbing when I tell people I’m going on Maury Povich’s ‘talk show.’
I get it, in the last several years the Maury Show has developed a running theme of “Who’s Your Daddy?” and that theme certainly doesn’t appeal to all audiences. But, like it or not, it certainly appeals to a very large following. Regardless if you like the Maury Show or not, you have to admit they know their audience, they know their product and they’ve been able to successfully do it and employ dozens of people for many, many years while countless numbers of other shows have come and gone.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with the show – which is why I go on the Maury Show and turn down many other appearance opportunities.
The Maury Show doesn’t ‘make fun’ of anyone – but does allow others to make fun of themselves, fulfill their idea of 15-minutes of fame and often answers some questions they otherwise wouldn’t have known (like ‘who’s the daddy?’).
The episodes I appear on are quite a bit different than the usual theme and are always ‘Caught on Tape’ moments.
In reality, I’m told, these are some of the highest rated episodes the Maury Show produces and that my appearance is always very well received and requested again and again – hence so many appearances over an 11-year period.
Over the years I’ve been an invited guest or appeared on shows like Sally Jesse Raphael, Montel Williams, Dr. Phil, TODAY, Nightline, Dateline and more.
But by far my most enjoyable appearances are on Maury’s show.
The travel is as seamless and painless as possible, the accommodations are always top notch and the staff is consistently the most friendly and professional I have ever worked with – with many being with the show for longer than I’ve been appearing and they always greet me with a handshake, a hug and a moment of conversation to catch-up.
This latest appearance was no different.
Due to the weather and my wife’s inability to join me, it was a quick trip. A driver picked me up at 4:30 a.m. to catch a 6 a.m. direct flight; spent the day in Stamford, up and at the studio at 7:30 a.m. the next morning, taping by 10:30 a.m. and then back and in OKC by 6:30 p.m. that evening.
I can’t reveal much about the show itself until it airs, but needless to say I’m introducing several clips of busted moments of ‘Johns’ caught in compromising situations on the streets and back alleys of south Oklahoma City.
Joining me on the show was several really talented people that were also introducing various shocking moments caught on tape.
One of the people I truly enjoyed seeing and meeting on this appearance the most was ‘hero’ Buffalo transit bus driver Darnell Barton - a very humble and genuinely nice guy.
I’m already planning my next appearance – so, unless you want to possibly see yourself on Maury, I wouldn’t advise getting caught engaging in street prostitution anytime soon!
I’ll be posting an air date for the most recent taping as soon as it is announced.
